Keep your students’ attention using rap song lyrics as scary short stories while they practice a variety of reading skills.
Easily incorporate them into independent activities or complete them together as a class lesson. The songs for these activities explore the lives of teens who encounter frightful problems such as a haunted smartphone app and their personal monsters. Use this scary stories unit to teach a variety of reading skills all October long or spread it out through the year to give your students some variety! (And don’t worry – we keep it kid appropriate!)

Kids love music and will certainly enjoy practicing a variety of reading skills such as identifying root words and affixes, using context clues, and identifying examples of personification using these rap song lyrics. Students will listen to the song while following along with the lyrics. Students will then complete the activities listed below.
