Superhero Reading Activities
Do you use superhero reading activities in the classroom? They’re an engaging way to make reading fun and rigorous for your students. Add in our superhero parody rap songs, and you’ve got a recipe for perfection! Below are great ways to teach a variety of reading and ELA skills with these songs.
Syllables and Rhythm
Rap songs get students interested in language and rhythm. Repetition in the verses and choruses help students to learn new words and phrases quickly, making it a great tool for vocabulary development. Additionally, the use of rhyme in rap music can help students learn about the structure of language. Try it for yourself with the decoding syllables activity below!
Fluency
One way to use our songs as a reading activity is to have your students read along with the lyrics of the song. As they read, they can practice fluency by trying to keep up with the pace of the rap. This can be done individually or in small groups, depending on the class size and the students’ abilities. Try it out with your students using the song below!
Vocabulary
Another way to use the songs is to have students learn new vocabulary words. Have your scholars pick out content-vocabulary words from the songs and define them using keywords and context clues in the text. If you’d like a done-for-you superhero vocabulary based on our songs, check out the one below.
Characters and Story Elements
Your students can also use the rap songs to learn about the characters and themes of a story. For example, if have them listen to one of the songs and then identify the character traits of the various people it discusses. This will help your kiddos connect with the story on a deeper level and make it more relatable to their own lives. Below is one of my favorite songs to do this with. See how it works with your students!
You can also use these songs as a springboard for further discussions about the story, characters, and themes. And all of our activities include turn-and-talk extensions to do just that. Overall, they’re a great addition to your curriculum and give your students a creative way to engage with the text.
“With great power, comes great reading skills!” or something like that.
